Professional Electrial Vehicle Charger Installation in San Diego
You won’t find many places in the country with as many electric vehicles as San Diego, and those numbers are only going up. But if you are one of the EV drivers here making do with a regular 120-volt outlet, you know the hassle. A full charge will eat up most of the night and when you get home on an empty tank, you’re left to hope you don’t have to put any more miles on it before morning.
That is where a Level 2 home charger comes in. Mauzy Electric puts in dedicated 240-volt circuits and the EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) for homes all over San Diego. Our licensed C10 electricians take care of everything from the panel to the final install as one complete job.
So what is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?
Level 1 is your typical household 120-volt outlet. It will give you about 3 to 5 extra miles of range for every hour you leave it plugged in. For the average driver, that isn’t much to work with unless you like to plan your day around charging. A Level 2 is another matter. Running on a 240-volt circuit like your oven or dryer, it can put 20 to 30 miles on your vehicle per hour. Most of our customers with a Level 2 simply plug in when they come home and don’t give it another thought until they see a full battery in the morning.
How we go about the installation
We start by looking at your electrical panel to see what it can handle. If you have a modern 200-amp panel, there is usually no problem adding a 50-amp circuit for the EV without an upgrade. An older home with 100-amp service might be a different story. We’ll be upfront with you on what your home requires and the cost of it before we do any work.
When it’s time to install, we’ll put the hardwired EVSE or dedicated outlet in your garage or driveway somewhere that is convenient for you. We handle the permit with the City of San Diego or the proper jurisdiction and make sure the work is inspected and approved.
As for the hardware itself, we are brand agnostic and work with all the major names – ChargePoint, Leviton, Eaton, JuiceBox and the rest. Some of our clients buy their unit from the car maker and let us do the electrical; others have us source and recommend a charger for them. Not sure which one suits your driving habits? We can help you figure it out.
There are also some incentives to be had. SDG&E has its Power Your Drive program for residential rebates and you may qualify for a federal tax credit on the equipment. Let us show you what is out there so you don’t miss out.
