Tankless Water Heater Installation FAQ

  • What are the Advantages of a Tankless Water Heater Over Traditional Systems?

What are the Advantages of a Tankless Water Heater Over Traditional Systems?

Ready to ditch that rusty old tank and join the space-age world of on-demand hot water? Tankless systems aren’t just a fad! Here are a few reasons these units have San Diego County homeowners kicking their traditional water heaters to the curb:

    Efficiency

With a traditional tank, you’re constantly paying to keep dozens of gallons of water piping hot 24/7, even if you’re not home using it. Such a waste! Tankless units only fire up that burner when you actually need the hot stuff. That on-demand heating translates into up to 30% savings on your monthly energy bills.

But the efficiency doesn’t stop there. Since there’s no constant standby heat loss, tankless systems are true energy misers. Many even meet the criteria for those sweet state/federal rebates and tax credits.

    Space-Saving Design

Why dedicate a whole closet or corner of your garage to an eyesore tank? Tankless units are compact, wall-mounted units no bigger than a briefcase. For space-starved San Diego County homes and condos, every square foot counts. You can finally reclaim that wasted tank area for more storage, a workspace, or maybe even a mini home gym!

And let’s not forget the safety benefits of going tankless. No more worrying about flooding from a busted tank or scalding risks. When you’ve got little ones running around, that peace of mind is priceless.

    Durability and Longevity

While traditional tanks give way every 8-10 years, a quality tankless system is built for the long haul. With proper annual maintenance, these workhorses can keep pumping out the hot water for 20 years or more. You’ll easily make up the higher upfront cost through lower energy bills and by avoiding premature replacement costs down the line.

Speaking of longevity, many tankless models now come backed by killer warranties too. We’re talking 10-15 years on parts and leaks. Those manufacturers know their stuff is built to go the distance!

    Endless Hot Water Supply

Here’s the real showstopper: no more frigid finishes to your showers! With a tank, you’re limited to whatever hot water is stored up. But a tankless unit keeps heating on-demand as long as you need it. Even with multiple showers and faucets blazing, that water stays piping hot. Your teenage daughter’s 45-minute shower marathons are no longer an issue!

So what are you waiting for? Stop throwing money down the tank drain and upgrade to the modern marvel of tankless! Your showers, wallet, and home value will thank you.

  • How Long Does a Tankless Water Heater Last?

How Long Does a Tankless Water Heater Last?

When it comes to getting your money’s worth, tankless units are like the Energizer Bunny of water heaters – they just keep going and going! With reasonable care, these gas-fired workhorses can keep cranking out endless hot showers for decades. Here’s the scoop:

    Expected Lifespan

While those old-school tank models are basically rendered obsolete after a decade, a quality tankless system is built for the long haul. You can typically expect 20-25 years of steady hot water from these overachievers with proper maintenance. Some even make it to the 30-year mark before waving the white flag!

    Key Factors for Longevity

A few key things will determine whether your tankless unit becomes a senior citizen or gets put out to pasture early. Water quality is huge – all that rock-hard H2O we get in San Diego County can really wreak havoc through mineral buildup over time. Frequent use also puts more strain on components compared to a unit that’s idle most days.

But the biggest make-or-break factor is routine maintenance. Neglect that annual tune-up, and you’re just asking for problems. Our team has seen way too many units get clogged up and fail prematurely from lack of care.

    Tips to Maximize Lifespan

To keep your tankless treasure trucking for decades, stick to this simple regimen. First up, get on a professional maintenance plan so we can come flush that unit annually and give it a clean bill of health. Skipping this step is a surefire way to void those fancy manufacturer warranties.

Next, consider installing a water softener or filtration system if you haven’t already. Removing those mineral and sediment nasties will prevent damaging buildup and extend your unit’s lifespan.

With a little routine TLC, your tankless investment will keep paying dividends for years to come in the form of low operating costs and endless hot showers. Who doesn’t love saving money while saving water at the same time?

  • Will a Tankless Water Heater Work for My Home in San Diego County?

Will a Tankless Water Heater Work for My Home in San Diego County?

Tankless water heaters are all the rage, but making the switch isn’t quite as simple as running to the hardware store. These high-efficiency units have some unique installation requirements to ensure they’re the right fit for your San Diego County home. Here’s the inside scoop:

    Home Requirements

First thing’s first – your plumbing and electrical systems need to be up to snuff. Tankless heaters have different venting needs, plus they’ll likely require an upgraded gas line or electrical circuit to handle the higher demand. An older home may need some retrofitting to make it all play nice.

Sizing is also crucial. For larger households, a whole-home tankless system with multiple units might be necessary to cover all that hot water usage. But a point-of-use setup could be perfect for a small condo just needing steady hot water in the kitchen or bathroom.

    San Diego County-Specific Insights

Living in this hard water hellscape we call home, scale buildup is public enemy #1 for tankless longevity. Having a water softener or filtration system installed is pretty much a must to keep things flowing smoothly long-term. Mineral buildup is a tankless unit’s biggest enemy!

Household size and usage patterns matter too. An on-demand system sized for a family of four could be overkill for a retired couple who aren’t hopping in and out of the shower constantly. Getting the right unit matched to your needs is key.

    Professional Evaluation

There’s really no one-size-fits-all answer here. That’s why the Mauzy pros come prepared to do a full assessment of your home and lifestyle. We’ll take a hard look at your plumbing, electrical situation, water quality, number of bathrooms – you name it. From there, we can spec out the perfect tankless solution built to run efficiently for years to come. No more second-guessing!

What Maintenance Does a Tankless Water Heater Require?

With a traditional tank water heater, maintenance is pretty straightforward – maybe drain some sediment off yearly and change the anode rod periodically. But these high-tech tankless systems require a bit more hands-on care to keep them firing on all cylinders long-term. Don’t sweat it though, we’re here to walk you through it!

    Routine Maintenance

The name of the game with tankless units is descaling – and doing it regularly. All that rock-hard San Diego County water means mineral buildup is inevitable. Letting scale accumulate on those heating elements and pipes is a surefire way to tank your unit’s efficiency and lifespan.

Depending on your water quality, you’ll want to descale anywhere from every 6 months to annually. It’s also crucial to swap out any filters on schedule to maintain proper water flow and prevent clogs.

    Warning Signs

If you start noticing some wonky issues like water that’s not getting as hot, heating that’s inconsistent, or error codes flashing on the display, it’s time for a tune-up. Strange noises or a funky rotten egg smell can also indicate scale buildup getting gnarly. Catching problems early prevents minor issues from spiraling into costly repairs down the road.

    DIY vs. Professional Care

For the DIY-inclined, descaling is definitely a task you can handle in-house with some handy vinegar solution. We’re happy to guide you through the process and any basic parts swaps needed.

But for comprehensive care, you’ll want to get on a professional maintenance plan. An annual inspection from the Mauzy pros means we can thoroughly flush the system, check all components, test outputs, and make any calibration tweaks needed. Staying ahead of trouble keeps that endless hot water flowing!

  • How Long Does It Take to Install a Tankless Water Heater?

How Long Does It Take to Install a Tankless Water Heater?

Ditching that old tank for a sleek new tankless system is pretty much the stuff of dreams. But let’s be real – no major home upgrade happens in 30-minutes. Proper tankless installation requires more attention than a typical water heater swap. Here’s what to expect:

    Standard Installation Timeline

For a straightforward tankless install on an existing home setup, you’re typically looking at anywhere from 4-8 hours of work from start to finish. But that is very much necessary because that timeline accounts for removing the old tank unit, running new venting and gas lines, mounting the tankless heater, and making all the proper connections.

    Factors That Can Extend Installation

But of course, there’s always potential for delays depending on your home’s current configuration. If your plumbing or electrical systems need retrofitting to accommodate the new tankless requirements, you can tack on several more hours of work right there.

Older homes may require upgrading gas lines, adding new electrical circuits, or rerouting exhaust venting to bring everything up to current code. Larger whole-home systems with multiple units could also stretch that timeline.

    Efficient Process

The good news is the Mauzy crew has installed more tankless systems than we can count at this point. Our experienced technicians know all the potential pitfalls to watch for and plan ahead accordingly.

We’ll take the time to thoroughly assess your home’s setup beforehand and give you a realistic estimate so there are no surprises. And when installation day arrives, you can count on an efficient, mess-minimizing process with as little disruption to your routine as possible. Before you know it, you’ll be basking in endless hot showers!

  • Can I Install a Tankless Water Heater Myself?

Can I Install a Tankless Water Heater Myself?

We’ve all had that vision – tackling a big home upgrade project ourselves. But before you start pricing out tankless water heaters and calling yourself a plumber, you might want to pump the brakes a bit. DIY tankless installs are a whole different beast than swapping out an old tank unit.

    The Challenges of Going Solo

Unlike traditional tank installations, setting up a tankless system requires coordinating multiple trades. It’s easy for an amateur to miss a crucial step or two and create serious safety hazards down the line. Stuff like gas leaks, improper venting, and fried circuit boards are no joke.

Even if you manage to get the unit fired up, taking shortcuts often voids those fancy manufacturer warranties before the tankless system is even broken in. Or worse, it creates efficiency issues and potential hazards that could put your whole household at risk just to save a few bucks. Not exactly a proud DIY moment.

    Why You Need a Pro

When it comes to an intricate, code-driven process like this, calling in experienced installers is always the smartest play. Outfits like Mauzy ensure every aspect – from sizing and venting to gas line upgrades – gets properly accounted for per local regulations and building codes. We simply know the ins and outs that DIYers don’t.

Our certified techs will also take the time to walk you through operation, maintenance requirements, any rebate paperwork, and more. With a professional install, you can sleep easy knowing it was done right the first time for peak safety and efficiency. No lingering doubts or rookie mistakes to worry about.

    The Mauzy Difference

Our team has installed more tankless systems than we can count at this point. We handle every single aspect of the job from the initial assessment to final testing – plumbing, gas fitting, electrical work, you name it. It’s a true one-stop shop with no headaches!

We also have inside knowledge of San Diego County’s unique permitting processes and code interpretations that can easily trip up amateurs. With Mauzy on your side, you can feel confident your new endless hot water system will keep pumping for decades without any surprise costs or safety risks. Why gamble with such an investment?

  • What Size Tankless Water Heater Do I Need?

What Size Tankless Water Heater Do I Need?

Sizing out the perfect tankless system is a bit tricky – you don’t want one too big or too small for your home’s hot water needs. An undersized unit will leave you taking cold showers, but oversizing also wastes money. Getting that sweet spot just right is crucial!

    Determining Size

The main factors that determine the ideal tankless size are your total number of bathrooms and fixtures, plus your typical peak hot water usage. A small condo with just one bathroom has way different demands than a 5-bed, 4-bath mega-house.

For example, a 1-2 bathroom home will likely only need a 4-7 gallon per minute (GPM) model to keep up during those times when every shower and faucet is cranking. But if you’ve got 3 or more bathrooms, you’re probably looking at an 8 GPM unit minimum, potentially even 10+ GPM for larger households that love their long, hot showers.

    Professional Guidance

Trying to guesstimate those numbers on your own is a surefire way to end up with inadequate hot water or an oversized, overpriced system. That’s why the Mauzy team takes a detailed look at your home’s layout, fixture count, and typical usage patterns. We’ll use those insights to recommend a perfectly sized tankless solution.

We can also anticipate potential future needs. Maybe you’re planning an addition down the road or just want a buffer for resale value. We’ll make sure you get a unit sized for lasting performance, not just your current situation.

At the end of the day, properly sizing that tankless heater prevents any post-installation regrets. With Mauzy’s guidance, you can avoid overspending on an oversized unit while ensuring true endless hot water for every need!

  • Are Tankless Water Heaters Worth the Investment?

Are Tankless Water Heaters Worth the Investment?

We cannot overlook the fact that tankless systems are more expensive than the normal traditional tank water heaters. But before you dismiss them as an over-the-top splurge, you need to look at the full picture. We’re talking years of savings, crazy energy efficiency, and hot water bliss that makes it an investment worth every penny.

    The Long-Term Value

Sure, that initial sticker shock can be tough to swallow. But these things are built to go the distance for 20 years or more. With a tankless unit slashing your monthly energy costs by up to 30%, you’re making back that upfront premium through lower bills alone over its lifespan. Not to mention avoiding those pesky premature replacement fees every 8-10 years like you get with tank models.

And the savings don’t stop there! Tankless systems create a way smaller carbon footprint by only heating water when you actually need it. You’re not paying to keep dozens of gallons hot 24/7 whether anyone’s home or not. They also conserve serious amounts of water compared to constantly reheating those storage tanks.

    The Hot Water Luxury

Of course, the real showstopper benefit has to be the endless hot showers! No more family bickering over who gets stuck with the cold dredges at the end. With a properly sized tankless unit, you get piping hot water on tap whenever you need it, no matter how many people are hopping in and out.

And let’s not overlook the space savings of going tankless too. Reclaiming all that closet or garage space from the old tank unit opens up new storage or living possibilities.

    The Local Perks

Rebates and tax credits for energy-efficient upgrades like tankless systems can shave hundreds right off that installation price tag. When you add it all up – the long-term savings, environmental benefits, hot water comfort, space savings, and local perks – it’s easy to see why tankless is such a wise investment for San Diego County homeowners. It really pays lasting dividends in more ways than one!

Carlos and Chandler were SUPERB installers! We got a very effective AC and Heating system for far less than I expected. We felt the difference right away as soon as we turned on the air conditioning unit. As important, Mauzy configured the system to optimize efficiency. I highly recommend you get a quote from this company if you’re in need of replacing your old equipment.

Update 2: my trust is restored. Had a little leakage in my box that connects to the fan and Luis went up in the attic and got it all sealed. Luis was very polite, professional, and genuinely happy. His positive attitude was very contagious and made my experience top notch. Also, I am happy to report that Mauzy stood behind their workmanship and covered all repairs under warranty. So so refreshing to have any company stand behind their workmanship. I have been with Mauzy since 2020 and will continue to be their customer. I would recommend Christian, Kylie, or Luis as your tech as well as recommend anyone out there to use Mauzy.Update: My trust is returning to Mauzy. Christian and Kylin came out to repair the repair and get my A/C up and running before the heat returns. Christian and Kyle were very professional, explain everything before proceeding, and let me know that the work would be covered under warrantyI have lost trust in Mauzy, Mauzy doesn’t stand behind their own work and what good is a warranty if you don’t stand behind it (This is a long one so sit tight). Where it all began: March 2020 I purchased a $23K A/C heating system from Mauzy. I was super happy with the install and I still love my system. I faithfully have used Mauzy service for my HVAC system every year since the install. I went with Mauzy bc they claim to stand behind their workmanship for the lifetime of the system (See Mauzy’s Attachment stating it also on their web page). Where the exchange box hooks up to the fan/heater a breach occurred between the box and the fan (service guy found it during my scheduled service in May 2024). It cost me approx $450.00 to have that breach fixed. Not sure why I had to pay if Mauzy offers a lifetime warranty on their workmanship, right? Matt Mauzy, feel free to explain this to me(see Mauzy’s warranty claim attached). I am open minded and perhaps my LA unified school education failed me. I got into it with one of Mauzy’s techs during the 2023 service for an issue with their workmanship. So to keep the peace, I didn’t argue with the charge in May and paid the $450 to have Mauzy repair their workmanship. Sunday 14 July, the repair Mauzy charged me for in May, didn’t hold up. I can’t use my heating or A/C bc it just dumps out in my attic. So Sunday I called the service line and the lady assured me there was no issue and scheduled a service call for the following Monday (15 July) no specified time. So this morning I made sure I was ready by 7am in case a technician showed up early. Around 9:15 I decided to call to see if I could get a better timeline from Mauzy only to find out that I don’t have an appointment yet. Come on Mauzy! why would your service desk make me believe I have an appointment when I don’t? Right? I would not have been so disgruntled if the service desk had told me someone would call me Monday morning to schedule. Matt Mauzy, you need to fix this. The soonest Mauzy can come out to fix their shoddy workmanship is sometime Thursday (maybe). I pray that this weeks heat wave is not too severe (this leads up to a whole other reason I need to get my A/C fixed). I will be thinking of you Matt Mauzy while you sit in your A/C house. Matt, Maybe you could come out from behind your desk and help your service department. I happen to be a tradesman and I have never left a customer in need hanging, especially if it was my fault. Just saying!Alex from Mauzy came out to conduct our annual service for our HVAC system. Good thing bc in of the seams in the unit had a hole and I was heating and cooling my attic. Super glad I have the inspection conducted every year. Alex was able to get the breach fixed and now the universe is rotating in harmony once again. BTW, I have been using Mauzy for the last 5 years (Mauzy also installed my HVAC) and I couldn’t be more satisfied. Mauzy truly does a good job and stands behind their work. Thank you Mauzy!

I am really happy with the customer service at Mauzy. Not only did they get me in promptly to replace my HVAC, they also beat the quotes of the other companies I contacted. Matt, Mario and Kenneth were really great explaining the process and getting the job done. They were respectful of my home and made sure my floors didn’t get dirty and cleaned up all the debris from the install. They made sure the unit was fully functional, testing temperatures and explain how to operate the system. I highly recommend Mauzy.

Kenneth and Mario are brothers! They were very respectful, happy and worked harder than I have ever seen anyone work. I had a pool delivered and on their break they offered to carry it to the backyard for me, and they helped get the last piece of the frame locked in as I was not strong enough to do it. They were so quiet I forgot they were in my attic. They were truly amazing! They cleaned up everything, it was like they were never here. I highly recommend Kenneth and Mario from Mauzy heating air and solar. Great job and thank you!!!

Michael at Mauzy worked very hard for two days to diagnose why our AC isn’t working. He had help from Jared the second day. A couple of burnt parts were replaced but it was determined an electrician was needed before they could complete their job. I did not meet Jared but Michael was professional, diligent, thorough and tidy and a pleasure to work with. I appreciated the detailed report afterwards. I am waiting for an updated invoice that details the discount I am due for signing up for their service plan. An electrician has been out and done his work. I’m waiting to hear about a follow up appointment to finish the AC issue. If I can get back to this review, I will update it when the service is complete. I’m new to Mauzy and so far am impressed.
