Bathroom Plumbing FAQ

  • How Do I Know If I Have a Bathroom Plumbing Issue?

How Do I Know If I Have a Bathroom Plumbing Issue?

From gurgling drains to shower heads that wouldn’t get a dog clean, bathroom plumbing problems have a way of making themselves known loud and clear. If you’re noticing any of these telltale signs of plumbing distress, it’s probably time to call in the professionals at Mauzy before that minor hiccup turns into a major flood situation.

    Low water pressure

When your sink faucet turns into a feeble trickle or that shower feels more like a drizzly disappointment, it could be anything from pesky pipe leaks and gunky clogs to straight-up failing fixtures restricting that water flow. Nothing kills a relaxing shower like having to cup water just to rinse the shampoo out.

    Strange noises

Start hearing weird whistling, banging, or groaning sounds from your bathroom pipes when you least expect it? This often indicates air pockets, mineral buildup, or loose connections that should be addressed promptly to prevent more serious plumbing issues.

    Discolored water

If that water coming out of your faucet or showerhead is looking a little rusty, yellowish, or cloudy, it probably means corrosion or sediment buildup is happening inside those pipes.

    Slow drains

When that bath water or sink basin starts draining at a glacial pace no matter how much Drano you pour down it, that’s a classic sign of nasty gunky clogs from hair, soap scum, or whatever else is building up and blocking that drain line.

    Unusual odors

Sewer smells wafting up from your toilet or tub or a musty funk lingering in your bathroom isn’t just unpleasant – it’s a big red flag that something’s backing up or leaking somewhere in your plumbing system. Better get those nose plugs ready.

    What to Do

If you’re noticing any of those unsettling indicators, do a quick check around for visible leaks, moisture spots, or standing water first. From there, it’s best to call in the Mauzy plumbing pros to properly diagnose and repair the issue before it snowballs into a much bigger (and more expensive) catastrophe. Trying to DIY those fixes with videos and a wrench is a surefire way to make that tiny leak turn into a flood.

  • How Often Should I Replace Bathroom Plumbing Fixtures?

How Often Should I Replace Bathroom Plumbing Fixtures?

Even the most reliable plumbing fixtures have an expiration date. From crusty mineral buildup to simply wearing out after decades of flushing, dripping, and spraying, those toilets, faucets, and showerheads won’t last forever. Here’s a quick look at the typical lifespan for bathroom fixtures so you know when it’s time to show them the porcelain door:

    Toilets

These porcelain thrones tend to hang in there for 10-15 years with normal family usage. But if you’ve got one of those vintage models from the 60s with the lead-lined tank and wooden seat, you might be living on borrowed time (and flushing money) already.

    Faucets

With proper care like using water-saving aerators and replacing washers, quality faucets can keep on ticking for 15-20 years. Though if you’ve still got the original builder-grade stuff that came with the house, don’t be surprised if they fail sooner due to constant drips and leaks.

    Pipes

This one really depends on the material. PVC pipes are the affordable option but usually only last 25-40 years before that plastic gets brittle. Copper is the premium choice that can keep chugging for 50 years or more if you treat it right without corrosion issues.

    Showerheads

Even the best showerheads with fancy massage settings are lucky to make it 8-10 years, especially if you’re dealing with hard water that causes mineral buildup and clogs those spray nozzles.

    When to Replace

If you find yourself constantly calling up Mauzy’s plumbers to make repairs on those aging, constantly-failing fixtures, it’s probably more cost-effective in the long run to just bite the bullet on full replacements. Recurring leaks, clogs, and issues are a telltale sign they’re on their last legs.

Or maybe you’re just ready to ditch those outdated, water-guzzling models for sleek new low-flow fixtures that’ll look great and save you serious cash on utility bills. Hey, upgrading to that luxurious rainshower showerhead is a solid investment in life’s little indulgences.

  • What Causes Bathroom Drains to Clog, and How Can I Prevent It?

What Causes Bathroom Drains to Clog, and How Can I Prevent It?

Clogged drains are annoying, unsightly, and a real pain to get rid of. From hair monsters to soap scum buildup, bathroom drains have an uncanny knack for getting gummed up if you’re not careful. Here’s what’s likely causing those clogs and how to keep ’em clear and flowing freely:

    Hair

This stringy stuff is public enemy #1 when it comes to shower and sink drain clogs. All it takes is a few stray strands to start tangling into a nasty hairball down your pipes. Guys, girls, dogs, doesn’t matter – any loose hair can contribute to the hairy madness.

    Soap Scum

That gunky residue from soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body washes might seem harmless, but it hardens over time and acts like a sticky trap for dirt, hair, and debris in your drains. It’s like an indestructible slimy glue holding everything together.

    Foreign Objects

Accidentally flushing small items like toothpaste caps, hair ties, bobby pins, or dropped jewelry and accessories down the sink or toilet can create an instant clog party. Toilets are not toy disposal units!

    Prevention Tips

Use drain covers or catchers to, well, catch that hair and debris before it has a chance to sneak down your pipes and cause a hairy situation. Those little $5 tub hair catchers can save you hundreds on plumbers.

Do a regular drain cleaning flush with some boiling hot water or a baking soda and vinegar mix to help dissolve and dislodge buildup before it becomes a problem. The fizzy reaction can eat through nasty gunk.

For toilets, only flush waste and toilet paper—avoid flushing anything else. Sending tampons, wet wipes, cotton balls, and other stuff down there is just asking for a clogged nightmare. Even “flushable” wipes can cause issues.

A little preventative drain maintenance goes a long way towards keeping things flowing smoothly. But if you do end up with a stubborn clog that won’t budge no matter what you try, don’t hesitate to call in the Mauzy plumbers to get that drain back on track quickly.

  • Is It Worth Upgrading to Water-Saving Fixtures?

Is It Worth Upgrading to Water-Saving Fixtures?

With our sunny San Diego County climate comes the constant need to conserve precious H2O. Upgrading to water-efficient bathroom fixtures is an investment that pays you back in more ways than one. Here’s why it’s worth taking the plunge on low-flow toilets, showerheads, faucets, and more:

    Cost Savings

Those old water-guzzling toilets from the 80s and 90s are like flushing money straight down the drain. Switching to a modern low-flow model can save you up to a hundred dollars per year on water bills alone. Over 10-15 years, that’s some serious cash back in your pocket.

Water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators might seem like no big deal, but they add up to some serious reductions in water and energy usage over time. Less water being heated and moving through pipes means lower utility costs month after month.

    Eco-Friendly

In a drought-prone area like San Diego County, conserving water is everyone’s responsibility to protect our limited resources. Cutting back on unnecessary waste from inefficient fixtures is an easy way to do your part for the environment and local community.

Plus, using less water means less strain on municipal treatment facilities and infrastructure. It’s a total win-win for going green.

    Modern Aesthetics

Let’s face it – those outdated bathroom fixtures from the 80s with their yellow plastic and clunky designs are doing nothing for your home’s appeal or value. Upgrading is a chance to enhance your bathroom’s look and feel with sleek new finishes and styles.

Who doesn’t love a luxurious new rainfall showerhead with multiple jet settings? Or a low-flow toilet that doesn’t sound like a jet engine every time you flush? Increasing efficiency and property values at the same time is a hard combo to beat.

With the Mauzy team’s expert advice and professional installation, getting set up with water-saving bathroom fixtures is a total no-brainer for San Diego homeowners. Why keep sending money and resources down the drain when efficient models can provide the same great performance for less?

  • Can I Handle Minor Plumbing Issues Myself?

Can I Handle Minor Plumbing Issues Myself?

Unless you’ve got a secret side hustle as a master plumber, there’s a razor-thin line between what’s a manageable DIY job and what’s a disaster waiting to happen that’ll have you calling the pros at Mauzy to swoop in and save the day.

    DIY Situations

Unclogging that stubborn bathroom sink or tub drain with a trusty plunger or drain snake? That’s generally fair game for the fearless homeowner. Just be ready to get up close and personal with whatever nastiness is clogging that pipe.

Swapping out worn washers, O-rings, or valve stems in a drippy faucet? A quick video tutorial can easily walk you through that straightforward fix. Just don’t go all out and overtighten everything into oblivion.

Tightening up loose connections under sinks or behind toilets? Sure, you can probably handle that – as long as you know what you’re doing and don’t accidentally create new leaks by stripping threads or cracking pipes.

When to Wave the White Flag

If you’re dealing with persistent issues that just won’t quit no matter what you try – like clogs that keep coming back, water pressure problems, or leaky faucets that mock your DIY skills – it’s time to admit defeat. Those recurring headaches usually signal bigger underlying issues that need a professional’s touch.

Speaking of leaks, any visible water damage or moisture spots are a huge red flag to get the Mauzy team involved ASAP before minor dampness turns into a full-blown mold monster situation. Trying to patch it up with flex tape is just putting a band-aid on a gunshot wound.

And if specialized tools like torches, pipe threaders, or gas lines are involved? Well, let’s just say if you have to ask whether you should be messing with that stuff, you probably shouldn’t. Improper work in those areas can lead to explosions, sewage nightmares, and other fun scenarios where you’ll be wishing you had called a pro from the start.

At the end of the day, a little DIY plumbing is all well and good for basic clogs or swapping out washers. But knowing when to hang up the wrench and call in the big guns from Mauzy is key to preventing tiny headaches from escalating into sewage tsunamis. When in doubt, save yourself the hassle and skipped showers by letting the experts do the job right the first time.

  • What Should I Do in a Bathroom Plumbing Emergency?

What Should I Do in a Bathroom Plumbing Emergency?

We’ve all been there – you wake up to a waterfall gushing from the bathroom ceiling or step into a cold, soggy puddle first thing in the morning. When plumbing emergencies strike, it’s a total panic mode situation that requires quick thinking and action to avoid a full-blown disaster. Here’s the drill when you find yourself staring down a plumbing crisis:

    Stop the Flow

First things first, locate the shut-off valves for your bathroom plumbing and get that water supply killed ASAP before things get any worse. Letting it keep flowing is just asking for a flood in your home. If you can’t find the fixture shutoffs, kill the main water line into your house to stem that tide.

    Contain the Chaos

Once the spigot’s turned off, grab any towels, buckets, trash cans – basically any container you can find – and get that leak or spill contained as best you can. Throwing down some old towels also helps create a dam to prevent water from spreading to other areas of your home. Do what you can to start drying things out like using nearby fans or opening the windows.

    Play It Safe

Steer clear of any electrical outlets, appliances, or lighting fixtures in water-damaged areas until you get the all-clear from the pros. Unless you’re going for that zapped rat look, mixing electricity and standing water is a big no-no that could leave you injured.

    Document Everything

If the damage is widespread, take plenty of photos and videos to document everything while it’s happening. Having a record of the extent and source can make insurance claims and remediation efforts way smoother down the line. The more evidence the better.

    Call for Backup

With the immediate flooding threat neutralized, it’s time to call in the Mauzy rapid response team to get that plumbing emergency fully diagnosed and repaired ASAP. Our experts will have that burst pipe or failed fixture sorted out and your bathroom back to normal before you know it. We’re always ready to help homes with any plumbing catastrophe.

    Keep Calm and Mop On

While you wait for help to arrive, keep working on cleaning up any standing water and drying out the area as much as possible with fans and dehumidifiers. The sooner you can get things dried out, the better chance you have of minimizing any permanent moisture damage. With some quick action and the right professional help, even the worst bathroom flood can usually be brought under control before it turns into a total teardown situation. The key is staying calm, stopping that water flow, and getting Mauzy on the scene ASAP!

  • How Can I Reduce Water Usage in My Bathroom?

How Can I Reduce Water Usage in My Bathroom?

In a place like San Diego County where droughts are more common than Chargers playoff appearances, conserving every drop of H2O is crucial. Fortunately, cutting back on your bathroom’s water usage is a lot easier than trying to solve the city’s long-running stadium saga. Just a few simple adjustments can lead to some serious savings:

    Install Aerators on Faucets

Those little gizmos might not look like much, but they work like a champ at reducing water flow from your sink faucets. Aerators mix air into the stream so you still get decent pressure with way less water usage. It’s a total win-win.

Switch to Dual-flush or Low-flow Toilets

Ditch that old water-guzzling throne and upgrade to a modern low-flow or dual-flush model. You’ll save gallons with every flush while still getting the job done, if you know what I mean. Your water bill will be happy you made the swap.

    Fix Leaks Promptly

Even a tiny little drip-drip-drip from a faucet or showerhead can seriously add up over time. We’re talking wasting hundreds of gallons of water per month from just one small leak. As soon as you spot one, call Mauzy to get it fixed before it morphs into a bigger problem.

Limit Shower Times and Upgrade Showerheads

Long, hot showers feel great until you get the water bill. Cut back on those marathon lather sessions and consider upgrading to a water-efficient showerhead that still delivers strong pressure. Your skin will forgive you, and your wallet will thank you.

Making just a few simple swaps and adjustments in your bathroom routine can effortlessly slash your water usage. Every little drop saved goes a long way, especially in drought-prone San Diego County! The planet and your bank account will appreciate the effort.

Here’s What Others Are Saying About Us

Carlos and Chandler were SUPERB installers! We got a very effective AC and Heating system for far less than I expected. We felt the difference right away as soon as we turned on the air conditioning unit. As important, Mauzy configured the system to optimize efficiency. I highly recommend you get a quote from this company if you’re in need of replacing your old equipment.

Update 2: my trust is restored. Had a little leakage in my box that connects to the fan and Luis went up in the attic and got it all sealed. Luis was very polite, professional, and genuinely happy. His positive attitude was very contagious and made my experience top notch. Also, I am happy to report that Mauzy stood behind their workmanship and covered all repairs under warranty. So so refreshing to have any company stand behind their workmanship. I have been with Mauzy since 2020 and will continue to be their customer. I would recommend Christian, Kylie, or Luis as your tech as well as recommend anyone out there to use Mauzy.Update: My trust is returning to Mauzy. Christian and Kylin came out to repair the repair and get my A/C up and running before the heat returns. Christian and Kyle were very professional, explain everything before proceeding, and let me know that the work would be covered under warrantyI have lost trust in Mauzy, Mauzy doesn’t stand behind their own work and what good is a warranty if you don’t stand behind it (This is a long one so sit tight). Where it all began: March 2020 I purchased a $23K A/C heating system from Mauzy. I was super happy with the install and I still love my system. I faithfully have used Mauzy service for my HVAC system every year since the install. I went with Mauzy bc they claim to stand behind their workmanship for the lifetime of the system (See Mauzy’s Attachment stating it also on their web page). Where the exchange box hooks up to the fan/heater a breach occurred between the box and the fan (service guy found it during my scheduled service in May 2024). It cost me approx $450.00 to have that breach fixed. Not sure why I had to pay if Mauzy offers a lifetime warranty on their workmanship, right? Matt Mauzy, feel free to explain this to me(see Mauzy’s warranty claim attached). I am open minded and perhaps my LA unified school education failed me. I got into it with one of Mauzy’s techs during the 2023 service for an issue with their workmanship. So to keep the peace, I didn’t argue with the charge in May and paid the $450 to have Mauzy repair their workmanship. Sunday 14 July, the repair Mauzy charged me for in May, didn’t hold up. I can’t use my heating or A/C bc it just dumps out in my attic. So Sunday I called the service line and the lady assured me there was no issue and scheduled a service call for the following Monday (15 July) no specified time. So this morning I made sure I was ready by 7am in case a technician showed up early. Around 9:15 I decided to call to see if I could get a better timeline from Mauzy only to find out that I don’t have an appointment yet. Come on Mauzy! why would your service desk make me believe I have an appointment when I don’t? Right? I would not have been so disgruntled if the service desk had told me someone would call me Monday morning to schedule. Matt Mauzy, you need to fix this. The soonest Mauzy can come out to fix their shoddy workmanship is sometime Thursday (maybe). I pray that this weeks heat wave is not too severe (this leads up to a whole other reason I need to get my A/C fixed). I will be thinking of you Matt Mauzy while you sit in your A/C house. Matt, Maybe you could come out from behind your desk and help your service department. I happen to be a tradesman and I have never left a customer in need hanging, especially if it was my fault. Just saying!Alex from Mauzy came out to conduct our annual service for our HVAC system. Good thing bc in of the seams in the unit had a hole and I was heating and cooling my attic. Super glad I have the inspection conducted every year. Alex was able to get the breach fixed and now the universe is rotating in harmony once again. BTW, I have been using Mauzy for the last 5 years (Mauzy also installed my HVAC) and I couldn’t be more satisfied. Mauzy truly does a good job and stands behind their work. Thank you Mauzy!

I am really happy with the customer service at Mauzy. Not only did they get me in promptly to replace my HVAC, they also beat the quotes of the other companies I contacted. Matt, Mario and Kenneth were really great explaining the process and getting the job done. They were respectful of my home and made sure my floors didn’t get dirty and cleaned up all the debris from the install. They made sure the unit was fully functional, testing temperatures and explain how to operate the system. I highly recommend Mauzy.

Kenneth and Mario are brothers! They were very respectful, happy and worked harder than I have ever seen anyone work. I had a pool delivered and on their break they offered to carry it to the backyard for me, and they helped get the last piece of the frame locked in as I was not strong enough to do it. They were so quiet I forgot they were in my attic. They were truly amazing! They cleaned up everything, it was like they were never here. I highly recommend Kenneth and Mario from Mauzy heating air and solar. Great job and thank you!!!

Michael at Mauzy worked very hard for two days to diagnose why our AC isn’t working. He had help from Jared the second day. A couple of burnt parts were replaced but it was determined an electrician was needed before they could complete their job. I did not meet Jared but Michael was professional, diligent, thorough and tidy and a pleasure to work with. I appreciated the detailed report afterwards. I am waiting for an updated invoice that details the discount I am due for signing up for their service plan. An electrician has been out and done his work. I’m waiting to hear about a follow up appointment to finish the AC issue. If I can get back to this review, I will update it when the service is complete. I’m new to Mauzy and so far am impressed.
